Joe Kagle: Recent Works
June 6–July 3, 1998

The art of Joe Kagle presents a rich and varied journey. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kagle's lifelong commitment to the visual arts began in early childhood with study at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum School of Art. He continued to study, winning over 50 national awards for his art work. He entered Dartmouth College, earning a B.A. degree in 1955, and in 1958 received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Colorado. Among his many awards are a Fulbright Scholarship and two Kellogg Fellowships. He has shown in over 400 national and international exhibitions, the most recent in the Czech Republic. Mr. Kagle is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Art.

From the late 1980s through the present, Kagle has worked on images that come from the public information explosion. He takes images from television, print media, and other sources to create his collages. Then the collages are laser printed, cut apart, and reassembled (sometimes painted over in the process.) This technique is continued until the final work is completed. Each laser print is a one of a kind original, although parts of earlier works do appear in the later works, usually in a different position or painted over.

During 1998, Mr. Kagle has continued a "Universal Landscape" theme. In March, he had multiple bypass surgery. While recovering, he made drawings of the architecture and images visible from his hospital window. These architectural drawings were the seeds to over 70 paintings he completed in March, April, and May of this year.
