Habitats: Cocoon to Castles (Education Gallery)

This exhibition includes works from the Tyler Museum of Art's permanent collection that advance the habitat theme and exemplify a range of media and time periods. They are:

  • an oil painting by Robert Kipniss, Untitled;
  • a photograph, Spotted Hound, San Jacinto County by Keith Carter;
  • an acrylic painting, Landscape with Victorian Cottage and Gazebo by Ancel E.
        Nunn;
  • a lithograph, House Under Construction, by Coreen Spellman;
  • glass art by Dale Chihuly entitled Teal Blue Seaform with Amber Body Wrap;
        and
  • a mixed media sculpture, Swamp Ritual by Clyde Connell.

    There are two photogravure prints by Edward S. Curtis, Pima "K," and Camp in the Cottonwoods-Cheyenne, on loan from Tyler Junior College. The other lenders to this exhibition are: Bob Cook, Virginia Demic, Mildred Johnson, Debbie Kuster, Linda Owen, Myrtis Smith and Betty Summers.

    The Education Gallery is a child-friendly space in the Museum designed to offer a wide variety of touring, learning and hands-on activity options for children of all ages. There are different stations that have materials, examples and directions for projects that relate to the theme and art objects on display. The gallery also includes a reading area, special puzzles and games and a computer station. Ideas are provided for topics of discussion, vocabulary identification and other questions to consider and examine throughout the gallery. This exhibition includes two- and three-dimensional art of a wide variety of habitats or dwelling places of people and animals. Many topics are presented such as: the art of architecture and interior design; the materials used in building structures; comparisons of dwellings built in different cultures and at different times; and the variety of habitats made by animals.
