Tyler Museum of Art Extends Exhibition Hours for Last Days of Chatsworth

Tyler, TX—Tyler Museum of Art Director Kimberley Bush Tomio announced Tuesday the TMA will remain open until 7 p.m. for the last three nights of The Devonshire Inheritance: Five Centuries of Collecting at Chatsworth. Tomio said the Museum is experiencing large numbers of visitors during the last week of the show, which closes Sunday, October 23, and the extended hours will allow even more people to see the exhibition.

“We’re sensitive to the fact that many people who want to experience this wonderful exhibition are limited by work hours and weekend commitments,” Ms. Tomio said. “That’s why we will be staying open until 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”

The exhibition has traveled to seven U.S. cities including New York, Palm Beach and Las Vegas. The Tyler Museum of Art was chosen as the only Texas museum to host this most famous private collection in England, the Cavendish family’s collection from their country estate of Chatsworth. Featuring some 250 pieces, the exhibition is a compendium of fine art, jewelry, porcelain, rare books, scientific instruments, unique objects from nature, early photography and architectural drawings collected since the sixteenth century by the Earls, Dukes and Duchesses of Devonshire. When the exhibition closes Sunday, the collection will return to England, where much of it is kept in the family’s private quarters and not available to visitors touring Chatsworth. Chatsworth is England’s most popular “Treasure House” destination, drawing in some 600,000 visitors annually to tour the home, gardens and other features of the estate.

Tomio said the Museum staff will spend the next three weeks de-installing the massive exhibition which has filled all three galleries at the TMA, and preparing it to be shipped back to England. For security during this process, the Museum will be closed to visitors from October 25 through November 9. The TMA will re-open November 10 for The Café and Gift Shop customers, as well as for visitors to the upstairs Carmichael Gallery, where selections from the Museum’s permanent collection will be on exhibition. On November 17, the Museum will open a TMA-organized exhibition in the downstairs Bell and North Galleries featuring noted Texas portrait artist, Harry Worthman. The exhibition, Harry Worthman: A Life in Art, will be shown through February 5, 2006.

For ticket prices and more information about the exhibition call the TMA at 903-595-1001. The Tyler Museum of Art is located at 1300 S. Mahon, adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus on Fifth Street.
