Two Special Chatsworth Events Planned for Weekend at Tyler Museum of Art

Tyler, TX—As the major exhibition The Devonshire Inheritance: Five Centuries of Collecting at Chatsworth, moves into its last weeks at the Tyler Museum of Art, visitors have a few more chances to experience “England in East Texas” at special events. Both a tea party and family day await those who make reservations for either or both events at the TMA at 1300 S. Mahon in Tyler.

The exhibition includes some 250 pieces of fine and decorative art, jewelry, rare books and letters, scientific instruments, minerals and historic architectural drawings collected since the 16th century by members of England’s noted Cavendish family, the Dukes and Duchesses of Devonshire. Chatsworth is the family’s magnificent country estate in Derbyshire, is one of England’s premier “Treasure Houses” and is toured by thousands each year.

A unique opportunity will be provided to enjoy the fine arts as well as fine finger foods at the “Counting My Chickens” Tea Party set for Saturday, October 15 from 3–5 pm on the Museum grounds. The theme comes from a book by the same name written by the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire who still resides at Chatsworth. The Duchess’ late husband, the 11th Duke of Devonshire, was responsible for organizing the traveling exhibition from his family’s extensive collection, in part he said, to thank Americans for the role they played in helping his country during World War II. The Dowager Duchess still raises chickens at the Chatsworth farms, and oversees a variety of commercial operations at the Chatsworth shops.

Attendees at the tea will enjoy beautiful decorations, including centerpieces inspired by A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh, Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit, Mary Engelbriet and MacKenzie-Childs. Felicity Enas, a British actress who now performs locally with Young Audiences of Northeast Texas, will entertain guests with her interpretation of Queen Elizabeth I.

Tickets for the tea must be purchased in advance by calling 903-595-1001, are $12 for TMA members and $15 for non-members, and do not include admission to the exhibition. Special sponsors of the tea include Joseph’s of Tyler Catering, All American Party and Tent Rentals, and the Junior League of Tyler.

Families with young children will have their special day to experience the Tyler Museum of Art at the “Artists of the Renaissance Family Day” Sunday, October 16 from 1–4 p.m.

“The Second Duke of Devonshire is often referred to as the Connoisseur Duke because he was such a learned collector,” explained Angela Watson, museum educator. “His collection was well known and highly respected throughout Europe and many collectors traveled to England just to view his collection of Renaissance art by Raphael, Dürer, Titian, Lorraine, Van Dyck, Mantegna and many others.”

Watson said families attending the event will get to experiment with various media and techniques that were popular with Renaissance artists including etching and engraving, sculpting, and foil repoussé, which imitates the silversmith process.

TMA Family Day attendees will also be entertained by storyteller Anne McCrady, harpist Angela Moreland, and by a performance of the R. E. Lee High School String Ensemble. Light refreshments will be provided. There is no charge for Family Day, but reservations are required. Call 903-595-1001 for reservations and more information.

“We welcome everyone to make reservations for these fun events, and to take advantage of the unique opportunity to see this collection before it closes at the TMA on October 23,” said Kimberley Tomio, Museum director. Tomio said Tyler is the last venue and the only Texas city to host the exhibition. Admission to the exhibition is free for TMA members. Non-member tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for Seniors 65+ and college students with ID, $5 for children 13–17, and $2 for children 3–12.
