Former Director to Discuss Permanent Collection at Tyler Museum of Art

Tyler, TX—Ron Gleason, former director of the Tyler Museum of Art, will be featured as the Museum’s guest lecturer when he presents “Envisioning a Permanent Collection,” Thursday from 5:30 pm. – 7 p.m. Gleason, who now serves as the director of the Faulconer Scholarship Program in Tyler, was TMA director from 1974 until 1981, and again from 1985 until 1994. The Museum began as a non-collecting museum, featuring only traveling exhibitions. Gleason expanded on early purchases, however, and began to develop and shape what became the TMA’s permanent collection.

“A museum’s permanent collection is intended to preserve works of importance, influence and value for the enjoyment of the public, as well as to educate and inspire. A permanent collection is a museum’s legacy,” said Kimberley Tomio, current Tyler Museum of Art director. “We are so fortunate to have Ron return to share his insight about the process of the Museum beginning and then expanding its permanent collection under his guidance.”

Gleason will highlight some of the works in the current exhibition, Thirty-three Years of Collecting at the Tyler Museum of Art, on display at the TMA through June 18, which were acquired during his tenure. The public is invited to this free lecture, but reservations are required, and can be made by calling (903)595-1001.
