TMA Announces Winners of Student Art Contest

Tyler, TX—Tyler Museum of Art recently announced the winners in this year’s juried competition of high school student artwork as part of the TMA’s Second Annual High School Art Exhibition. Ribbons were awarded to the winning participants at a special reception held for the student artists and their instructors on March 4 in the Carmichael Gallery of the Museum.

“Best of Show” honors went to Mary Evelyn Coles of Spring Hill High School for her paper collage on canvas, Cleopatra Revisited. First Place was awarded to Tiffany Petty of Robert E. Lee High School for her untitled chalk pastel on paper. Second Place ribbon went to Taylor Bush, Robert E. Lee High School, for his acrylic on paper creation entitled Watch Out?. Third Place honors went to Jamie Ashton, Robert E. Lee High School, for a collage on paper entitled Michael.

Four Honorable Mention ribbons were awarded for the entries of student artists Azucena Velazquez of John Tyler High School, and Brittany Shelbon, Kate Williams and Cammie Jensen, all of Robert E. Lee High School. In addition, each of the 30 student artist participants was recognized at the reception and received a certificate for a free one-year student membership at the TMA.

Works from senior students from four area high schools were chosen by their art teachers as entries in the exhibition. Art in a variety of media from students at John Tyler, Robert E. Lee, Spring Hill and Whitehouse High Schools was submitted. These selections were then judged by a panel of professional artists and art instructors to determine the award winners for this exhibition. Jurors were art professors Curtis Watson from Texas College, Chris Stewart from Tyler Junior College and James Pace from University of Texas at Tyler. Dr. Pace also gave a brief lecture at the reception.

“While we select certain pieces for special recognition, all the students who compete in this show should be recognized for their talent and commitment to producing outstanding visual art,” said Bob Thompson, TMA head of education. “We would also like to commend the teachers for their efforts in helping make this exhibition available to the community.”

Teachers involved this year included, from Robert E Lee High School: Linda Keane, David Ackerson and Linda East; from John Tyler High School: Marilyn Coler, Steve Fugua and Jay Etheredge; from Whitehouse High School: Christine L. Killian and Lisa Kendall; and from Spring Hill High School: Bud Dunn. The student art exhibition is free and open to the public, and is on display at the Tyler Museum of Art through March 26.
