Student Art Exhibition to Open at TMA

Tyler, TX—Works from some of Tyler’s most artistic high school students will be featured in a new exhibition opening March 4 at the Tyler Museum of Art. Art students from John Tyler, Robert E. Lee, Spring Hill and Whitehouse High Schools are competing in the second annual juried exhibition, with winners to be announced at a special reception March 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Carmichael Gallery at the TMA. The student art will be on exhibit through March 26. Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

“Part of our stated mission is that the Tyler Museum of Art exists as an educational and cultural center to enrich the lives of East Texas citizens,” said Bob Thompson, TMA head of education. “In addition to hosting tours for thousands of students each year, and working with area teachers to enrich their curricula, we host this exhibition to encourage and promote young talent.”

Art in the exhibition, which includes a variety of media and styles, is first selected by the teachers from works submitted by senior art students. These selections are then judged by a panel of professional artists and art instructors to determine the award winners for this exhibition.

“While we select certain pieces for special recognition, all the students who compete in this show should be recognized for their talent and commitment to producing outstanding visual art,” Thompson added. “We would also like to commend the teachers for their efforts in helping make this exhibition available to the community.”

Students competing from the classes of Robert E Lee High School art teachers Linda Keane, David Ackerson and Linda East include Jackson Pitts, Jenna Martin, Katherine Stowe, Cammie Jensen, Deanna Shipman, Tiffany Petty, Taylor Bush, Reagan Fair, Brandi Rivera, Brittany Shelbon, Jamie Ashton and Katie Williams.

Students competing from the classes of John Tyler High School art teachers Marilyn Coler, Steve Fugua and Jay Etheredge include Azucena Velazquez, Alberto Quinonez, Paul Dean, Joel Chacon, Johan Gonzalez and Olivia Valle.

Students competing from the classes of Whitehouse High School art teachers Christine L. Killian and Lisa Kendall include AJ Danforth, Francisco Carrillo, JR Quintero, Heather Brents, Connie Collins and Peter Sullivan.

Students competing from the classes of Spring Hill High School art teacher Bud Dunn include Mary Evelyn Coles, Christian Johnston and Jacy Mann.
