TMA Closes Out Scenes from the American West Exhibition With Free Family Day May 17

Tyler, TX—
Barely a week remains for East Texans to “go west” at the Tyler Museum of Art, as the TMA plans to close out the popular exhibition Scenes from the American West: The Phelan Collection with a free Family Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 17.

The celebration, open to the public at no cost, will include a self-guided tour of the exhibition, in addition to art activities for young visitors, family gallery guides, and light refreshments. Space for Family Day is limited, so participants are encouraged to sign up early by calling (903) 595-1001.

Scenes from the American West, which has drawn thousands of visitors to the TMA since opening Feb. 22, showcases more than 60 artworks from the collection of Arthur J. Phelan, a Maryland native who began to stoke a lifelong fascination with the American frontier upon his first travels to the Western states in the 1950s. Since acquiring his first piece of American Western art in 1967, Phelan’s collection has grown into one of the best-known of its kind in the United States. Works by artists such as Frederic Remington, Thomas Hill, Albert Bierstadt and Lone Wolf are just a few of the notable pieces featured in the exhibition.

Scenes from the American West is organized by the TMA. Sponsorsfor the exhibition are Austin Bank and Potter-Minton P.C., with additional support provided by Collectors’ Circle sponsor, The Robert M. Rogers Foundation; and Corporate Member sponsors, Hibbs-Hallmark & Co. and Texas Oncology-Tyler. Media sponsor is KLTV Channel 7.
