TMA's Family Day is a Cool Place for Summer Activities

Tyler, TX—When it’s approaching three digits on the outdoor thermometer, and the kids need something to distract them besides another run through a warm water sprinkler, schedule a visit to the Tyler Museum of Art. The Museum’s July Family Day is set for July 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Activities are planned to coincide with the Museum’s current major exhibition, Illuminating the Word: The Saint John’s Bible, which showcases the most significant hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible of the modern era.

Bob Thompson, TMA director of education, said there will be a variety of events and special art projects for families with children, including making decorative letters similar to those used as chapter initials in The Saint John’s Bible. With the special Family Day ticket price of $10 per family, all family members can view the exhibition as well as participate in a special “gallery search”, which Thompson described as a sort of guided treasure hunt. There is no charge for participating in Family Day art activities (which does not include exhibition admission). Reservations are not required, but are requested by calling 903-595-1001. Light refreshments will also be served.

In addition, spaces are still available in the Tyler Museum of Art Summer Art Camps, held in the air-conditioned classroom at the Museum, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Young attendees will experiment with age-appropriate activities including calligraphy, illumination and manuscript making. Ages 7–8 will attend July 11–14; ages 9–10 will attend July 18–21, and ages 11–12 will attend July 25–28. The Museum is closed on Mondays. Cost for the camps are $55 for TMA members (student must be a member or be included in a family membership) and $65 for non-members. Call 903-595-1001 today for reservations or more information.
