The Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection of Mexican and Latin American Folk Art

Silent Night Holy Night

Tyler, TX—In connection with the Past/Present/Future: Folk Art of Mexico exhibition and in celebration of the holiday season, the TMA also is unveiling a new show highlighting pieces amassed by the Boeckmans: Silent Night, Holy Night: From the Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection of Mexican & Latin American Folk Art.

Silent Night, Holy Night boasts 16 miniature scenes depicting the birth of Jesus Christ as interpreted by Latin American artists, many of whom the Boeckmans commissioned on an annual basis to create new works for the holiday season.

Also known as créches, a French term literally translating to "infant beds" but popularly used to denote "nativity scenes" in North America, the works represent close to 25 years of collecting by the Boeckmans.

"I used to get one artist a year to make small nativities for my godchildren and nieces and nephews, and we'd commission a new artist in Mexico every year. Obviously, it's a very representative form in Mexico, where someone in every village will do a nativity," Boeckman said. "My mother used to collect them, and I used to collect them for her – then I stopped giving them to her because I enjoyed them so much."

Boeckman emphasized that the créches are not currently included in the permanent gift to TMA.

"It's kind of my little folk art collection that I'm keeping for the time being," he said.

Silent Night, Holy Night opens to the public Sunday, November 18, and will continue through January 27 in the Museum's Bell Gallery. Past/Present/Future: Folk Art of Mexico, Selected Works from the Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection of Mexican and Latin American Folk Art continues through Jan. 6 in the North Gallery. Admission to both shows is free, but donations are encouraged.

The Tyler Museum of Art is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., at the corner of Apache Pass, adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1–5 p.m. Sunday. The Museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. For more information, call 903-595-1001
