TMA celebrates children's books and illustrations with Peter Sís Family Day
June 13, 2004
2:00–4:00

The Tyler Museum of Art celebrates the works of children’s book writer and illustrator Peter Sís by hosting a day filled with fun and imagination. Family Day at the Tyler Museum of Art will be on Sunday, June 13, 2004 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and will be held in conjunction with the exhibition Discovering the World with Peter Sís.

Come discover the adventures that Sís’ characters undertake in this imaginative exhibition. As a part of the family day activities there will be art projects as well as a story time at 2 p.m. for children of all ages to enjoy. Additionally, Young Audiences will bring more fun to the occasion by performing an interactive version of "Starry Messenger," one of Sís’ stories, at 3:15 p.m.

Peter Sís fulfilled his childhood dream of exploring the world through his children’s books by writing about and illustrating the adventures of others. Often, he begins with a map, inviting young readers to join him in discovering the world. The characters in his books are often historical figures who break through walls or dare to discover, whether it be Christopher Columbus navigating the oceans, Galileo Galilei searching the heavens with a telescope, or Charles Darwin theorizing the origin of man. He has illustrated nearly 50 children’s books and has written the text for many of them. Sís’ work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States, and his children’s books have been published in 27 countries and translated into 20 languages.

The exhibition will be on view through August 1, 2004. A special Family Activity Center and Video will be available throughout the duration of the exhibition for everyone to enjoy.

The exhibition as well as Family Day activities are FREE to the public. Funding for Family Day has been provided by Target Distribution Center of Tyler. The exhibition is organized by The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, Abilene, Texas.

The Museum Café offers light lunches Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Museum Shop offers unique gift items for sale, including several books by Peter Sís.
