Local Art Students Featured in Latest TMA Exhibition

Tyler, TX—Talented art students from Tyler’s Robert E. Lee and John Tyler High Schools can add a new item to their college applications and job resumes: “featured artist.” Works from 22 students from the art classes of those two local high schools are being shown in the Tyler Museum of Art’s newest exhibition, March 22–April 3. The special exhibition is part of the TMA’s celebration of National Youth Art Month.

“The works cover a variety of subject matter and media, but all have in common a youthful exuberance and sense of discovery,” said Ken Tomio, TMA curator. “One senses on walking into the gallery an amazing breadth of talent just waiting to be nurtured, developed and released to the world.”

Tomio said the art faculty at both high schools were instrumental in creating and organizing the exhibition. Art faculty assisting with the show include from John Tyler High School: Marilyn Coler, Melissa Walta and Neil Sreenan; and from Robert E. Lee High School: Linda Keane and David Ackerson.

Student artists participating in TMA’s first high school art exhibition, which according to Tomio is planned to be an annual event, include from RE Lee: Chelsy Beanblossom, Chad Brown, Megan Combs, Celestino Jaramillo, Cammie Jensen, Jenna Martin, Adrienne Nalbone, Michael Pianta, Jack Pitts, Jonathan Sterling and Alexander Conway York. >From John Tyler High School: Sandra Basurto, Brandon Barnard, Claudia Calleja, Ana Garcia, Uriel Marcial, Harold Mateos, Javiar Monsivais, Alberta Quiñones, Yesenia Ramirez, Carlos Salas, and Azucena Velasquez.

Entries in the exhibition are being judged by an independent panel, with awards to be presented at a special reception and ceremony April 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tyler Museum of Art. Jurors for the competition include James Pace of the University of Texas at Tyler, Christ Stewart of Tyler Junior College, and Curtis Watson of Texas College. The public is invited to both the free exhibition and the reception. The TMA is located at 1300 S. Mahon, adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus. Exhibition hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; the Museum is closed on Mondays.
