Tyler Museum of Art Offers Fun Family Day Activities on Sunday with Worthman Exhibition

Tyler, TX—The Tyler Museum of Art has several activities planned for their Family Day event set for Sunday (November 20) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in conjunction with the opening of the newest TMA exhibition, Harry Worthman: A Life in Art.

Worthman (1909–1989) was a much sought-after portrait artist during the 1940s through the 1980s, painting such notables as Presidents John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan, retail magnate JC Penney, astronaut Alan Shepard, columnist Ann Landers, Texas governors John Connally and Price Daniel, and even the famous American artist Norman Rockwell.

Young artists will get to try their own hand at making family portraits with two activities. One will entail family portraits being made with Polaroid cameras, and then the children will decorate them with markers, crayons, foam pieces and other creative materials. The other activity will have parents posing while their children draw their portraits with oil pastels. Children of all ages are welcome to enjoy the activities, but must be accompanied by their parents or guardians.

The activities are designed by Jennifer Vaughn, Orr Elementary art educator, and will be managed by Angela Watson, TMA art education coordinator. Ms. Watson said light refreshments will be served. The event is free of charge, but reservations are required and can be made by calling 903-595-1001.

The 160-piece Worthman exhibition, the first major museum exhibition of this late Texas artist’s works, was organized by the TMA and will be open through February 5 in the Museum’s Bell and North Galleries. Exhibition hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There is no admission charge but donations are accepted. The Tyler Museum of Art is located at 1300 S. Mahon, adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus.
