Lecture and Reception
Why a Painting is Like a Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art
Thursday, May 29

The Tyler Museum of Art will present a lecture entitled Why a Painting is Like a Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art on Thursday, May 29, at 5:30. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 903/595-1001. Admission is free for TMA members, $5 for non-members

The lecture will be presented by Nancy G. Heller, Ph.D. and will be followed by a pizza reception and book signing.

Dr. Heller is a professor of art history at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has also taught at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University, and has published articles in many periodicals including The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, ARTnews, ARTS magazine, and American Artist. Her most recent books include Women Artists: Works from the National Museum of Women in the Arts and Why a Painting is Like a Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art.

Nancy Heller gives lectures regularly—at art museums, clubs, universities, and for numerous other organizations. Comparing modern art not only to pizzas but also to traditional and children's art, Dr. Heller shows in a very entertaining and engaging fashion how to use the analytical tools developed in everyday life to understand and enjoy almost any painting, sculpture, or installation.
