TMA Announces Property Purchase Plans

Tyler, TX—Tyler Museum of Art representatives today announced the organization is proceeding with preliminary plans for building a new facility to meet growing demands for larger galleries, more vault storage for its permanent collection and additional classrooms for school tours and educational activities. Architectural and engineering firms have been retained by the TMA board of directors to conduct feasibility studies for property located on the southeast corner of the intersection of University and Lazy Creek Drives in Tyler.

"We are in the early phases of this project but we're obviously excited about the possibilities," said Betty Summers, Tyler Museum of Art board president. "The TMA Site Committee has been very diligent in considering many options, from staying where we are and enlarging, to remodeling existing buildings, to building something brand new. When cost estimates and long range plans came together, this location was preeminent."

Summers said the purchase has not yet been finalized, although property owners and the Museum have signed preliminary agreements, pending architectural and engineering reports, and zoning decisions. She said TMA representatives will be meeting with neighborhood homeowners associations representatives and other interested property owners today to discuss zoning considerations. The Museum plans to keep much of the property in its natural state, with green belts and nature trails included in the landscape architect's designs.

"We are keenly aware that this is a beautiful, green oasis in a rapidly growing neighborhood of homes, businesses and educational facilities. We will be a good neighbor," said Kimberley Tomio, TMA director. "We've been in our current building adjacent to the TJC campus for over 36 years, and we've had a wonderful relationship with our neighbors here. I expect that will also be the case when we move. Building a new art museum is a huge commitment to the future. We hope the community will support us as we work to enhance the lives of all East Texans and future generations."
