Expert and Author on Early Texas Art to Speak at Tyler Museum of Art

Tyler, TX—William Reaves Jr., Ph.D., co-founder of the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA), will be the next speaker for the Fall Lecture Series at the Tyler Museum of Art, October 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Reaves will also autograph copies of his book, Texas Art and a Wildcatter’s Dream: Edgar B. Davis and the San Antonio Art League. The lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are required and can be made by calling (903)595-1001. Copies of Reaves book will be available at the Museum Shop at the TMA.

Reaves, who is a well-known collector of early Texas art, is lecturing on A Showcase of Texas Art: The Davis Wildflower Competitions 1927-1929 in conjunction with TMA’s current exhibition, The Eyes of Texas: The Lone Star State as Seen by Her Artists, on display through January 2, 2005. Reaves’ book, published in 1998, is the ninth installment of the “Joe and Betty Moore Texas Art Series” by the Texas A&M University Press.

In addition to his work promoting Texas art and Texas art history, Reaves serves as the executive director of the Center for Research, Evaluation and Advancement of Teacher Education. In this role he oversees statewide teacher quality and public school improvement projects involving all nine universities within the Texas A&M University System. His work also involves improving teacher education programs with the Texas State University System and the University of Texas System. Dr. Reaves has more than 20 years experience in the public schools as a teacher and administrator in three states. He received his undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of South Alabama, and his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin.

“We are so pleased to have someone of Dr. Reaves’ stature speak on Texas art in conjunction with our current exhibition,” said Kim Tomio, TMA director. “His knowledge of early Texas art and artists will be interesting both from historical and artistic perspectives.”

The Eyes of Texas: The Lone Star State as Seen by Her Artists exhibition is sponsored by Bill Cheek and the Summerlee Foundation, of Dallas. The exhibition presents 68 pieces from Bill and Mary Cheek’s personal collection of early Texas art created by some of the state’s most famous artists including Dawson Dawson-Watson, Reveau Bassett, Alexandre Hogue, Janet Turner and many others.
