Registration Still Open for Kids Age 6-9 in TMA’s 2009 Summer Art Camps

TYLER, TX—Kids age 6-9 will have the opportunity to gain an appreciation of clothing as an art form essential to a society’s culture and history—and create artwork of their own—during the Tyler Museum of Art’s next round of Summer Art Camps.

Spaces are still available for the two camps, offered in separate morning sessions from 9 a.m. to noon July 6-10 for 6-7-year-olds, and July 13-17 for children ages 8-9.

Under the guidance of Tyler ISD art instructors Jennifer Vaughn and Juliana Wynn, students will explore the camp’s spotlight exhibition Fashioning Kimono: Art Deco and Modernism in Japan, highlighting an extraordinary collection of kimono from the last era of their extensive use in Japan. After the gallery tours, campers then can dive in to their own original art projects inspired by the show, including Japanese kites and mobiles, printmaking, bamboo painting and batik wall hangings. On the final day of each camp, students will display the art they created during the week for their families to view at the Family Party.

“The Museum just came off another successful collaboration with Caldwell Zoo for our first art camp this summer, and we’re positive the excitement we saw among the young campers will carry over to these next two sessions,” TMA education coordinator Jane Smith said. “We have two extremely talented art instructors signed up to teach and a beautiful exhibition in Fashioning Kimono, which we’re positive will be a fun and inspiring experience for all of our students – at an age when art appreciation can have an impact that will last a lifetime.”
Cost for each week of camps is $115 for children of Museum members, and $130 for non-members. The class fee includes all art supplies and a light snack each day, and all camp participants will receive a free TMA Summer Art Camp T-shirt. To register, call the Museum’s Education Department at (903) 595-1001, or e-mail educate@tylermuseum.org.

The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. (The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays, including Saturday, July 4.)
