Tyler Museum of Art Presents First Friday Tour and Special Father's Day Reception

Tyler, TX—The Tyler Museum of Art announced plans recently for special events in conjunction with the current exhibition, Father & Son: Ancel E. Nunn and William Young. A special curator-led tour, artist gallery talk, and Father’s Day reception are all open to the public.

The First Friday Art Tour, set for June 3 at 11:30 a.m., will be led by TMA Curator Ken Tomio who will discuss well-known Texas artist Ancel Edward Nunn (1928-1999), and the work of his son, William Edward Young.

Young, who now lives and works in the home and studio of his late father in Palestine, will lead a TMA Gallery Talk June 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the Museum, located at 1300 S. Mahon, adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus. Young will discuss both his and his father’s work, comparing and contrasting their style, techniques and direction. There will also be a Father’s Day Reception June 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with light refreshments for the public. There is no charge for the reception or gallery talk, but reservations must be made by June 16. The First Friday Tour is free for TMA members plus one guest, and $3 for non-members. Make reservations for any of the events by calling (903)595-1001.

This Tyler Museum of Art exhibition brings works of the father and son together for the first time. Tomio explained that Young (who uses his mother’s maiden name) was estranged from his father for many years after his parents divorced. The two were reunited when Young was 18, after he visited his father’s home and studio in Palestine. “What occurred then was magical; the son and the father—both artists—connected in a way that nurtured both men in the development of their work,” Tomio said. “For the father, already a well-established and successful artist, it was rewarding because he was able to share philosophies and techniques and work with his son on producing etchings and lithographs. For the son, his own artistic talent was encouraged, and he was able to see that it was indeed possible to be a full-time artist.”

Father & Son: Ancel E Nunn and William Young exhibition is open in conjunction with Mothers & Daughters: Three Generations of Artists, which features artwork by Tyler physician Sasha Vukelja, MD; her mother, the late Katarina Maksimovic of Yugoslavia; and Dr. Vukelja’s young daughter, Maxi Anderson. Both exhibitions run through June 26 in the Museum’s North Gallery. TMA’s Bell Gallery currently features part of the Museum’s permanent collection featuring early and modern Texas artists, in Thirty-three Years of Collecting at the Tyler Museum of Art, which runs through June 18. The upstairs Carmichael Gallery features The Face of Texas: Photographs by Michael O’Brien, which will close June 5. All TMA galleries will be closed June 27–July 29 as the Museum prepares for the major exhibition The Devonshire Inheritance: Five Centuries of Collecting at Chatsworth. This exhibition, which features over 200 pieces of fine and decorative art, jewelry, early photography, and historic scientific instruments collected by England’s Cavendish family since 1552, opens July 30 and will fill all TMA exhibition areas. Tickets are on sale now and available by calling (903)595-1001.
